Oman Club is considered as the chief club in Oman. It was founded in 1932 when Makboul Hussein, of Pakistan, was working in Muscat. He wanted to found a club, carrying his name, mostly opposite Ali bin Mousa Mosque, in the current location of the Ministry of Finance, to include hockey, tennis and badminton. Then, volleyball and basketball were included when El-Saidia School was built in Muscat in 1940. As for football, Captain Awad Al-Hassawi, the Club’s Sports Supervisor, said that the first football team in Oman Club was formed in a certain part and playground in same site of Makboul Hussein Club with the name El-Alam El-Ahmar which represented the Calub in this game until 1942. Then all games were unified under the banner of the first officially-registered club in Oman carrying the name of the great land, Oman. The first board chairman of the Club was Khalfan bin Nasser Al-Wahibi. Then, Mr. Ahmed bin Salem Al Gomaa; until the current Chairman, H.H. Nayef bin Obeid Al-Salami.
Achievements:
The Oman Club won the Sultan Qaboos Cup for hockey more than five times; and for football twice. In addition, the Club won the premier league once.
Al-Hassawi says that the most important and brilliant achievement stage of the club was in the middle of the eighties, in the era of the Chairmen Dr. Hamad Al-Ryami and H.H. Qays bin Tarek Al Said, in which the Club was on top of hockey, volleyball, basketball, handball and swimming. This is the stage in which the club was transferred from the old location, in muscat, to the new one, in Al-Khwair, including the Club headquarters, the main playground and the sub-playgrounds, dedicated for all games, in addition to the important investment facilities, which support the club’s trade activities, and Oman International Bowling Gallery. As for the secret of the Club decline during the past few years as Captain Hossam says: since the headquarter shifted from Muscat to Al Khuwayr, the Club was affected by the players living far from the new headquarter, in addition to the retirement of a lot of the main old players, besides, Oman club is the only club who relies on the skills, while selecting the players, instead of the provision of local teams in its region. All of these reasons formed a great factor in the Club decline, in addition to the generation’s concern with their education and their career future which lead to a period of rescission all over Muscat and hopefully this will end within the coming two years.
Oman Club makes an effective contribution in the development of the Omani sports as it is considered everyone’s club and it provides training fields for youths to train in. it also deals with the Omani associations and clubs by providing its stadiums for different events, qualifiers and local competitions in addition to holding cultural and youths forums in Summer and in Ramadan.
As for the international contributions, the sports supervision of the Club states that they are proud of being the first club to represent Oman in the international competitions in all sports, and its most precious contribution is when the Club won the runner-up title in Asia Champions League in the mid-nineties.
